Adventure in finding sand!
We our finishing Spring Break here in Portland. Yesterday we decided we needed to find some sand for the bottom area of the kids fort in the back yard. So we flipped a coin to see if we would be heading East or West in our search. West won so we headed west bound hwy 30 to Astoria,OR, which is about 1hr from the house. Before leaving Saint Helens we bought lunch and some juice and began our adventure in finding a beach with sand.
About Astoria the kids said the infamous words "I need to go to the bathroom" so we pulled into the parking lot of the Maritime Musuem. Bought tickets for Shane, Kelli, and I so we could see the exhibits and go to the restrooms. The younger kids were free! So after using the potty chair Shane and the older two watched a short showing of the history of the area, the two younger kids lasted maybe 5 minutes before they were ready to wander.
Together we all walked around the museum which was quite facinating historical documentation of the fishing and prominent part that area played throughout the 1800's through today. We even got to make a rope, and walk on a ship called the 'Columbia' which was once used by the Coast Guard
After leaving Astoria, we headed West then South on Hwy 101 till we found Fort Stevens Beach area near Shipwreck beach. Were after walking down we discovered you could drive on the beach. So trooper Shane hiked back to the Van and found the access point to the beach. We all played in the sand and surf, saw people razor clam dig, flying kites, and enjoy the beautiful weather.
.

After loading with the approval of the beach director who Daniel happened to make friends with. We loaded up a 10 gal tub and some buckets of sand, and headed home with only once trying to sink in the sand. Lesson learned stay on the well beaten route. It was close to a 2 hour drive, but well worth it.
